The Hoka One One Mafate Speed 4 is a trail running shoe that’s engineered to deliver a blend of agility, support, and cushioning for off-road adventures.

As an avid trail runner, and a big fan of the Hoka Speedgoat 5, I was intrigued to try this particular shoe and see how it compares to others. Having tried it out on a number of terrains, here is my review

Features of the Hoka Mafate Speed 4

Let’s take a look at the features of this popular Hoka trail shoe:

Exceptional cushioning

One of the standout features of the Mafate Speed 4 is its exceptional cushioning. Hoka’s signature oversized midsole provides plush comfort and excellent shock absorption, allowing for a smooth ride even on those rockier trails, where so often you can feel every stone and rock beneath your foot. When tackling technical descents, the ample cushioning effectively minimizes foot fatigue and discomfort, making it the ideal shoe for those who run long on tough terrain.

Well-balanced design

Despite its generous cushioning, the Mafate Speed 4 remains surprisingly agile. The shoe’s lightweight construction and responsive midsole enable quick transitions and nimble movements on the trail. I found myself confidently navigating sharp turns and uneven surfaces without feeling weighed down or sluggish, thanks to the shoe’s well-balanced design.

Impressive traction

Another notable aspect of the Mafate Speed 4 is its impressive traction. The multidirectional lugs on the outsole provide a reliable grip on a variety of surfaces, from loose gravel to muddy trails. Whether ascending steep inclines or descending slippery slopes, I felt secure and stable with every step, allowing me to maintain pace and control even in challenging conditions.

Durability

Durability is where the Mafate Speed 4 truly shines. The reinforced upper and robust materials withstand the rigours of trail running, shrugging off abrasions and protecting against debris. Despite countless miles on rugged terrain, the shoes show minimal signs of wear and tear, not unlike the Hoka Speedgoat 5, attesting to their exceptional build quality and longevity. In fact, this is consistent across the range of Hoka trail shoes.

Fit

In terms of fit, the Mafate Speed 4 offers a snug yet comfortable feel. The engineered mesh upper conforms to the foot’s shape, providing a supportive and secure fit without sacrificing breathability. The roomy toe box allows for natural toe splay, reducing the risk of blisters and discomfort during long runs.

Best for…

Like all trail shoes, there will always be a preferred shoe for the occasion. We like our Speedgoat 5 for running long when we are running between road and trail. The Mafate Speed 4 is designed for speedier running and is a shoe that we keep for mid-longer trail races. As a lightweight, responsive shoe it will enable you to fly over the trails with confidence.

Conclusion

Overall, the Hoka One One Mafate Speed 4 is a top performer in the realm of trail running shoes. With its winning combination of cushioning, agility, traction, and durability, it’s a versatile option for runners seeking reliable performance on rugged trails. Whether tackling technical terrain or logging miles on smoother paths, the Mafate Speed 4 delivers an exceptional running experience from start to finish.
