Courtney Dauwalter is the ‘GOAT’ when it comes to trail and ultra running. For those unfamiliar with the term, it’s the ‘down with the kids’ speak for ‘Greatest of all Time’ although she is also somewhat of a mountain goat so it could be taken in the literal sense. For, those of you that are unfamiliar with Courtney then, if you’re a fan of all things trail running, we suggest you give her a follow! We are massive fans of her endeavours and achievements and were ultra impressed with her recent wins at The Western States 100 followed shortly after by a win at the Hard Rock 100.

Update – she has since won the UTMB in Chamonix.

We don’t think there has been anyone to else quite like her although some of you may disagree. Don’t get us wrong, we’re not discounting the efforts of some of the top endurance athletes in the world but it’s her name that adorns the record books at races like the WS100. Only this year she took an impressive amount of time of her own previous course record finishing in an astonishing time of 15 hours and 29 minutes. We did some rough calculations and that equates to 9:18 a mile! With an incredible 18.000 ft of elevation and the first 16 miles trudging through snow, that is no mean feat. She does this all fuelled by cereal, nachos, mashed potatoes, and stuffing!!!!

Courtney’s Achievements

At the age of 38, Courtney has been winning races since turning professional in 2017. These are just some of her accolades:

  • UTMB 2019 Winner
  • UTMB 2021 Winner
  • Hardrock 100 2022 Winner
  • Grand Raid in la Réunion 2022
  • Hardrock 100 2023 Winner
  • Western States 100 2018
  • Western States 100 2023

Of course, we would all love to be more Courtney – to be able to deal with the levels of pain and suffering as she can and to be able to just keep running and running. The MOAB 240 is another one of her incredible feats.

We can’t get enough of her endeavours, and neither can anyone else it would seem. She’s even making merch from her coined phrases “the pain cave” and now has her own brand of dedicated shorts – The Shortney. While we are all reveling in her awesomeness, and wondering how we can be more Courtney, let’s take time to look at the shoes that she wears…
